“The best time to figure out how you will reach someone's family during an emergency is before they arrive.” Danielle spent years working alongside healthcare coalitions, emergency managers, hospitals, EMS, public health, and government partners preparing organizations for emergencies.

As Readiness and Response Coordinator in Northeast Kansas, she supported hospitals and response partners, developed and exercised emergency preparedness and continuity plans, and took part in reunification planning, exercises, and real-world response. That work led her to ask what would happen if the connection between a person, the organization responsible for them, and the people who care about them was established before it was ever needed.

That thinking is behind reUNITEme^™. If a child is separated from a parent at an event, the next step should not be searching for contact information or waiting for someone to report them missing. It should be identifying the child, reaching the right contact, saying, “Your child is safe,” and giving clear reunification instructions.

Danielle believes preparedness should include the connection around a person, especially for older adults, children, and passengers traveling without family. She co-founded the Healthcare Coalition Partners of Kansas and holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University.

After more than 30 years in healthcare and more than 17 years in disaster preparedness, Tami has learned that some of the hardest problems in an emergency are information and connection problems.

As a paramedic in prehospital care, an ER nurse, and a Regional Hospital/Healthcare Coalition Coordinator, Tami has seen how difficult reunification can be. A child is found, but responders do not know how to reach their parents. An older adult needs care while traveling alone. A patient arrives at a hospital, but staff have no clear way to identify them and contact the people who know them best. Even when someone is safe, their loved ones may have no way to find out.

Tami's experience spans nursing, EMS, rural and critical-access healthcare, healthcare coalitions, emergency planning, training, and exercises. She has also served as a contract instructor for the Center for Domestic Preparedness, helping response professionals from across the nation prepare for complex incidents. She co-founded Healthcare Coalition Partners of Kansas, where she worked with healthcare and response organizations across agency and jurisdictional boundaries.

Those experiences shaped her belief that reunification must be planned before an emergency begins. Through reUNITEme™, Tami is working to make the connection between a person, the people caring for them, and the people waiting for news easier to establish when it matters most. Sometimes the most valuable thing an organization can tell a family is also the simplest: "Your loved one is safe."
